History of Overfield

The Overfield Early Childhood Program was founded in 1960 as the Overfield Nursery School by Julia Hobart.  The first class was made up of twelve children whose parents felt the need for this type of school in the community.  The school met for 28 years in the back of the Overfield Museum, which is one of the first buildings built in Troy by Benjamin Overfield in 1808.  In March 1970, Overfield’s program was recognized and granted licensing by the State of Ohio.  As the years went by, Overfield increased in numbers of children attending and in the numbers of class sessions held until, by 1988, there were 65 children and school was in session 5 days a week.

In 1988, after Overfield was given accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the Hobart Brothers Company offered the school the use of the Edward and Martha Hobart house and grounds at 172 South Ridge Avenue.  In September 1989, Overfield, after an extensive renovation, opened its new yellow doors of the all-steel building to 100 children and faculty of nine teachers.  In January 1998, the school was given funds by William and Julia Hobart to purchase the school buildings and surrounding grounds.  Without the generosity of William and Julia, the Hobart Brothers Company and the C.C. Hobart Foundation, none of this could have happened.
